Summary / Introduction

This course follows National Highway Sector Scheme 12D, focusing on the installation and removal of temporary traffic management on both rural and urban roads.

Target Audience

The NHSS 12D M7 course is designed for all levels of management, client officers, technicians, and anyone who is not directly involved in installing Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) but needs to understand the basics of TTM on urban and rural roads.

This course is a mandatory requirement for Technical Officers under the NHSS12D guidelines.

Refresher Course: Due to recent changes in the Code of Practice, you’ll need to complete the revised T7 training course to ensure your knowledge is up to date. Please note, on-site assessments are not required for refresher training.

Description

This course covers the following key topics:

  • Operative and scheme requirements, reference documentation, and definitions
  • Categories of the road network and operations, and principal responsibilities
  • Overview of highway legislation affecting Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) operations
  • On-site assessments and other legislative requirements
  • Equipment, its uses, and requirements for use
  • Site requirements, limitations, actions, and monitoring
  • Site- and activity-specific requirements
  • Setting up scenarios for temporary traffic management
  • 12D M7 End of Course Test

Product Objectives

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the National Highway Sector Schemes
  • Recognise Traffic Management Health & Safety issues
  • Interpret the requirements of ‘The Safety at Street Works and Road Works: A Code of Practice (The Red Book)’ and guidance from ‘The Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 8’
  • Evaluate all options to determine the required level and extent of Temporary Traffic Management
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the site risk assessment process
  • Assess and determine the temporary traffic layout needed for a given work location, activity, or operation
  • Understand the acceptable standards for traffic management equipment
  • Identify the implications of changing conditions on-site and liaise with staff to recommend remedial actions
  • Confirm the suitability of TTM plans before work begins on-site
  • Understand the needs of non-motorised road users
  • Be aware of the requirements for convoy working
