Introduction to the Manual Handling for Temporary Traffic Management Operatives by THS Training
By the end of this course, learners will have the skills and knowledge to:
- Define ‘Manual handling’: Gain a clear understanding of manual handling, including the activities it involves—lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects—and how these relate to everyday work tasks.
- Understand the legislation for manual handling operations: Become familiar with the legal requirements governing manual handling in the workplace, including key legislation like the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended), and recognise the importance of compliance to ensure safety for everyone.
- Understand how manual handling can cause injuries: Learn how improper manual handling techniques lead to injuries such as musculoskeletal disorders, strains, sprains, and long-term back problems. Explore the risk factors and understand the health impact of poor manual handling practices.
- Understand the risks in temporary traffic management operations: Discover the specific challenges in temporary traffic management, including hazards like traffic flow disruption, vehicle movement, pedestrian safety, and the manual handling issues associated with high-risk environments like roadworks and construction sites.
- Learn good handling techniques: Master safe manual handling techniques that reduce the risk of injury. These include proper body posture, correct lifting methods, and the use of equipment such as trolleys and lifting aids, ensuring safe task execution.
- Apply risk control principles in practical situations: Learn to assess manual handling risks in real work environments and apply control measures to minimise those risks. Gain the skills to evaluate scenarios and adjust handling methods to keep risks to a minimum.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will complete a multiple-choice test with 16 questions. To pass, learners must achieve at least 75%. After passing, successful candidates will receive a certificate from Lantra Awards, a recognised industry awarding organisation, confirming their knowledge and competence in safe manual handling practices within temporary traffic management operations.
We aim to help learners understand the challenges that come with manual handling tasks in the temporary traffic management industry. This includes the types of injuries that could happen, how to prevent them, and how to avoid personal injury claims.
Our goal is to ensure that everyone stays safe and complies with the latest laws to keep the workplace secure for all.
