The Course Details

This course covers the following topics:

  • Quality Assurance and National Highway Sector Schemes
  • BS EN ISO 9001
  • National Highway Sector Scheme 12

Health and Safety at Work

You will cover key areas such as:

  • Employer and employee responsibilities
  • Health and Safety at Work Act (HSE)
  • Risk Assessments and Method Statements – their purpose and importance

Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual

This section includes:

  • Types of works, definitions, and safety zones
  • Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions – their role in the TTM industry

Documentation

You will explore key publications relevant to the temporary traffic management industry.

Traffic Management Operations

The course will focus on:

  • Signing and coning requirements – setting up closures, road markings, and marker posts
  • Temporary Traffic Management vehicle requirements – understanding different types of vehicles
  • Vehicle checks and loading – loading for easy unloading, responsibility for vehicle and load, gross and unladen vehicle weights
  • Crossing the carriageway on foot – an introduction to Health and Safety document CIS 53
  • Safe working methods for installing, maintaining, and removing signs and cones – key considerations for developing safe work practices

This course is designed for individuals required to work on motorways or high-speed dual carriageways.

Other Areas of Interest

Complete the 12A/B General Operative course and pass a set of on-site and off-site assessments to obtain full Operative status (TM card).

The assessments must be completed within two years from the first assessment date.

Prerequisites

If you are new to the industry or do not hold other current NHSS 12ABCD Temporary Traffic Management skills registration cards/certificates (excluding 12D M7) you will need to undertake the Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course (TTMBC). You will be required to gain 3 months ‘on the job’ experience prior to attending the 12A/B General Operative course.
