Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual
This section will cover the following:
- Types of works, definitions, and safety zones
- Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions – What they are and how they relate to the TTM industry
Documentation
We will also review key publications relevant to the temporary traffic management industry.
Traffic Management Operations
This section will address:
- Signing and coning requirements – Setting up closures, road markings, and marker posts
- Temporary Traffic Management vehicle requirements – Understanding the different types of vehicles
- Checking and loading vehicles – How to load vehicles for easy unloading, responsibility for the vehicle and its load, Gross and Unladen vehicle weights
- Crossing the carriageway on foot – An introduction to Health and Safety document CIS 53
- Safe working methods for installation, maintenance, and removal of signs and cones – Although we won’t provide specific systems of work, we will explore important issues to consider when developing a safe system of work.

This course is intended for individuals who will be required by their employer to work on motorways or high-speed dual carriageways.

Upon completing this course, you will:
- Understand the principles of Quality Assurance
- Become familiar with the training and assessment process to register as a Temporary Traffic Management Operative
- Understand the relevant Health and Safety legislation and your responsibilities
- Learn safe working practices
- Gain familiarity with key reference documentation used in the Temporary Traffic Management industry
- Understand safe working methods for installing, maintaining, and removing temporary traffic management equipment
- Be able to plan a Chapter 8 closure from a given datum
Other Areas of Interest
By completing the 12A/B General Operative course and passing both on-site and off-site assessments, you can obtain full Operative status (TM card), as outlined in the Sector Scheme document.
Additionally, the assessments must be completed within two years from the date of the first assessment.
